Plural Subject Plural Verb

Plural Subject Plural Verb:  If the subject is plural, the verb must also be plural. There are some special cases.

A) If two or more sigular nouns are joined by conjunction 'and' the plural form of verb is used.

  • A car and a bike are the two means of transportation.
  • B)  If we are refering to the members of the unit individually, the plural form of verb is used.

  • The cast have been practising their lines.
  • The flock were running off in every direction.
  • C) Some nouns such as police but plural in meaning the plural form of verb is used.

  • The police are already here.
  • D) Sometimes, a wòrd that is actually an adjective is used as a noun. It is preceded by 'the' which means 'people'

    (The poor = people who are poor). Plural verb is required. Example: 

  • The poor are trustworthy.
  • The rich are generally unkind to the food
  • Exceptional Cases:

    1. A plural noun denoting quantity or measurements of time money, distance or weight as a unit, takes singular verb. e.g.

  • Five kilograms is not a heavy weight. 
  • Hundred rupees is a big amount for him.
  • 2. 'One of, 'Either of', 'Neither of ',' None of' always take plural noun and singular verb. Note the onstruction:

    One of / None of / Either of / Neither of /None of + plural noun + singular verb. e.g.

  • One of my friends needs some help. 
  • None of those reasons is valid
